Founded in 1872 by Julius Morton in Nebraska City, Arbor Day foundation began because of Morton's ambition to challenge people around the country to plant trees and conserve them. On the first Arbor Day celebrated, around one million trees were planted in Nebraska. Arbor Day foundation is significant to the state's history because it was founded in Nebraska City. It was an effort to make Nebraska, as well as the rest of the United States, a greener and a healthier environment.
Taken from Arbor Day Foundations website, "Together, we're making our world cleaner and greener. In your yard and around the world, we're planting where they're needed most. There are currently eight programs in Arbor Day Foundation that all vary between planting trees, tree recovery and even celebrating Arbor Day. All of these programs are made to plant, protect and celebrate the earth and its trees that inhabit it. "
We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to talk to Danny Cohn, who is the Director of Public Relations at Arbor Day Foundation. Danny shared his reasoning behind joining Arbor Day Foundation and what it truly means to him. Danny, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, spent 20 years in Chicago after obtaining his degree in Marketing. He soon realized he wanted to "use my skill set to better the earth" and came back to Nebraska to work for the Arbor Day Foundation. When asked what Arbor Day means to him, he responded with, "coming from Omaha and knowing that if it wasn't for Arbor Day none of the cities west of Nebraska City would exist today because cities formed where the trees were planted." When asked how he feels about it he said he feels grateful for the generations before us who had the initiative to form this holiday. Danny went on to state that back in 1872 no one knew about clean air or water, so it was a huge impact when Arbor Day started.
Since Arbor Day Foundation is a national platform, it partners with Alliance for Community Trees, also know as ACTress, to spread the work load of incoming volunteers. When we asked Danny on how to volunteer and what someone could expect to do, he urged the citizens of Lincoln to go to www.ACTrees.org and to find something that interests you in helping out with this foundation. When volunteering with ACTrees, you would be bettering the city of Lincoln by cleaning up green ways or simply planting trees in a park or urban area.
With the 144th Arbor Day coming up, April 29th, Danny and The Arbor Day Foundation would appreciate readers to go to www.Arborday.org or www.ACTrees.org to find out how to help out and/or donate. As Danny stated in our interview, "we can say cities grew out of trees, so go out and celebrate, plant, and protect our nations trees."
Happy early Arbor Day!
